Chimney Damper Repair and Replacement

The damper opens to let smoke out and closes to keep conditioned air in. Whether a damper can be repaired or needs replacing depends on which type you have, what condition it is in, and whether the chimney it sits in is sound. A replacement also has to be compatible with your chimney, so it should be assessed first.

Throat damper vs. top-sealing damper

  • Throat damper: a metal plate or assembly just above the firebox, opened and closed with a handle or lever inside the fireplace. It is the traditional style. Because it is inside the chimney throat it can warp, rust, or stop sealing well over time.
  • Top-sealing damper: installed at the top of the flue, usually with a cable that runs down to the firebox. It closes against a gasket at the top of the chimney and doubles as a cap that keeps rain and animals out. It is often chosen when a throat damper no longer seals or when drafts and water entry are a concern.

Neither type is best for every home. The right choice depends on the flue, the crown, the fireplace, and how you use it.

Signs of a damper problem

  • It will not open or close fully, or sticks
  • Handle or mechanism is loose, broken, or missing
  • Rust or flaking metal on the damper plate
  • Cold drafts or heat loss with the fireplace unused
  • Rain or debris falling into the firebox
  • Smoke spilling into the room because the damper cannot open fully

Some of these can come from other causes. For smoke in the room, see smoke problems and poor draft.

Repair or replace

A damper that is simply stuck, dirty, or out of adjustment may be serviced. One that is warped, rusted through, cracked, or missing parts is usually a replacement candidate. Part of the decision is the surrounding structure: damper work is limited by the state of the smoke chamber, the flue, and the crown it connects to.

Compatibility matters

A top-sealing damper has to fit the flue size and shape and the crown or top of the chimney. The cable path, the clearance, and the way it mounts all depend on the specific chimney. If the flue has damage, or a liner is being added, the damper choice may need to be revisited. We assess the chimney before recommending a type and do not assume one product fits every opening.

Questions to ask

  • Is my current damper repairable, or is replacement the better option?
  • Is a top-sealing damper compatible with my flue and crown?
  • Does the chimney need other repairs first?
  • How is it operated, and what maintenance does it need?
