Creosote Cleaning Logs vs Professional Chimney Cleaning

Store-bought creosote logs and powders are sold as an easy alternative to sweeping. The Chimney Safety Institute of America says mechanical brushing is the only proven way to clean a chimney.

What cleaning logs and powders claim to do

Creosote-removing products come as logs, powders and liquids. They are burned or applied with the stated goal of loosening or changing creosote so it falls away or becomes easier to remove. They are sold as a way to save a service call.

What the chimney safety community says

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) has warned against relying on these products as the only maintenance. Its guidance is that mechanical brushing is the only proven way to remove deposits from a chimney. Chemical products may help a professional loosen stubborn creosote, but they do not replace sweeping, and annual professional inspection is still recommended.

The part a product cannot do

A log cannot look at the flue. Cracked tile, a failed crown, a missing cap, an animal nest or a collapsed liner are all invisible to someone who only burns a product. These are the problems an inspection exists to catch. Our guide on camera inspection shows what a sweep sees inside the flue.

Practical view. If you enjoy using a product between visits, that is your choice, but do not treat it as a reason to skip the annual inspection or the cleaning that the inspection recommends.

How often a real cleaning is needed

That depends on how much you burn, what you burn and the condition of the flue. See how often to inspect and clean a chimney, and note that burning dry wood reduces how fast deposits form: dry firewood: how to season, test and store it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cleaning log safe to use?

Follow the manufacturer’s directions, burn it only in the appliance it is intended for, and do not treat it as a substitute for sweeping. If you have a stove or insert, check that the product is meant for it.

Can a log cause problems?

A product that loosens deposits can drop material inside the flue without removing it from the system. That is another reason to have the flue looked at by a professional.

I used a log. Do I still need a sweep?

Yes. A product does not tell you whether the flue is clear or sound.
