Seasonal Chimney Maintenance for New Jersey Homeowners
A chimney does not need the same attention every month. A simple seasonal rhythm works for many homes: check before the burning season, watch it during, and look for water and storm damage after. This is a practical guide, not a legal or code requirement, and the right cleaning schedule varies with how much and what you burn.

(862) 225-6529Before burning season (late summer to early fall)
- Schedule an inspection if you have not had one in the past year or if anything changed
- Ask whether cleaning is needed based on the deposits
- Check that the damper opens and closes
- Look for staining or crumbling mortar at the base and at the top
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Keep wood dry and stored away from the house
During burning season
- Burn seasoned wood and avoid smoldering fires
- Notice any smoke entering the room, new smells, or draft changes
- Do not burn trash or treated wood
- Stop and call if something seems wrong
After winter
- Look for water stains near the chimney
- Note any cracks, loose bricks, or crumbling mortar visible from the ground
- Ask for an inspection if freeze-thaw cycles were severe
After storms
- Check for debris on the roof or in the yard
- Watch for leaks after heavy or wind-driven rain
- Have the chimney inspected if you suspect impact or wind damage
Spring and summer
Water is the main enemy when the fireplace is not in use. Check for odors, leaks, and a damper that does not close, and consider repairs while scheduling is easier.
What not to do yourself
Do not climb on a roof, modify the venting, or work on gas components. Call a professional.
